How does a web server work?

We all use the Internet on a daily basis. And to keep up-to-date with technology, we follow various online magazines, technology blogs. But have you ever once thought about the online blogs or webpages we are visiting, how they basically work, or how they help us?

Today we will see how web servers work and how webpages help us?

The blog you are reading now, how did you come to this blog? The simple answer is, you have started the net on your mobile or computer, then you have the help of a program or software known as a web browser. Such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Safari. You then type a URL (Uniform Resource Locator) in the browser address bar such as https://Techsanjeet.com and press the Enter button. But the question is how do you open the webpage as you type a URL in your browser and press the Enter button?

In a nutshell, when you type a URL into a browser and press the Enter button, your browser communicates with the computer on which this webpage is needed. The server computer then sends this webpage to your computer and the browser puts it in front of you. Some of the systems worked between the client computer, the server computer asking for information, and the server computer and the information provided. We'll look at how the systems basically work, but before that, we need to know a few things.

Internet

internet

The word internet is very familiar to us. In the present world, there are many people who are not properly eaten or sleeping on the Internet. What is the Internet?

As many computers worldwide, they first connect themselves to different types of local networks. These networks of local computers are subsequently connected to another network, and that network is the Internet. Generally, a computer located at home communicates with an ISP (Internet Service Provider) or Internet service provider through its own modem, and through that ISP, it connects itself to the Internet. And office computers first establish communication between themselves through the LAN or the Local Area Network. Later, this LAN connects to a local ISP and takes advantage of the Internet. The internet we usually use at home modem sends about 4,000 bits of data per second. And if the internet that I use through the LAN in the office is high-speed, it sends about 1 million bits of data per second. However, the LAN that is connected to a PC, which maintains communication with the ISP, is again connected to a larger ISP. In the continuation of the ISP, the largest ISP available in a country or region is usually connected to a fiber optic backbone. Such backbones are connected to each other by means of high-speed optical-fiber (located at the bottom of the ocean) or satellite. In this way, the computers located on the two sides of the earth, communicate with each other through the Internet.

Client and server

In all, all the computers connected to the Internet can be divided into two. One is the server computer and the other is the client computer. Servers server computers. And the client receives the services of the computer. But it is also possible that a computer is simultaneously serving and taking service. A server computer has different types of software, which help him finish certain tasks faster. For example, an e-mail server enables a computer to exchange e-mail. When you send an e-mail to a friend via Gmail (or any e-mail server), your e-mail sends different servers to your friend's computer and each server uses its e-mail server software to do this.

IP Address (IP-Internet Protocol Address)

IP Address

IP Address

Each computer connected to the Internet has a fixed and single number, though this number changes each time it is disconnected. And this is called an IP address or Internet Protocol address. Generally, the IP address of the server does not change. Because many computers keep the original server running on a gradual basis, the server is not disconnected from the internet for no particular reason. However, when a PC is connected to the Internet through an ISP through a modem, the ISP gives it an IP address, which remains unchanged until the Internet is disconnected. To see the IP address on the Windows operating system, when there is an Internet connection, go to Command Prompt and type ipconfig and press Enter, you will see your IP address. Domain name

Domain name

Domain name

Domain name means we understand the name of an organization, we can see the organization's webpage by typing that name into the address bar of the browser. For example, 'To Host' is an organization and https://Techsanjeet.com is its domain name. As we learned about IP addresses above, the domain name is actually used instead of this IP address. There are thousands of web servers in the world, and it is very unusual for us to remember the IP addresses of these servers. So the domain name system, which publishes the IP address in English.

The address of a webpage consists of 5 things.

Name of the Regulator (Host Name - "WWW")
Organization Name (Domain Name- "Techsanjeet")
The nature of the organization (".com")

The hostname is an optional part of the domain name. Any company can provide the hostname as per their wish. Although WWW has been widely used as a hostname before, many companies do not use it recently and use other names. For example, there is no hostname before https://Techsanjeet.com. Hostnames are sometimes called third-level domain names or third-level domain names. The organization's familiar name refers to the type or nature of an organization. Such as company with '.com'; '.Org' with 'organization'; '.Edu' means 'education' etc. When the root name of the organization ('Techsanjeet') is read in conjunction with its nature ('.com'), that whole section is called the second-level domain name of the organization (Techsanjeet.com). This second-level domain name is the complement of the organization's IP address.

Domain Name Server (DNS)

DNS (Domain Name Servers) is a type of database that stores a list of domain names stored against each IP address. And this list is not stored on a specific server on the Internet but is widely distributed worldwide. When you enter a domain name into your browser's address bar and press Enter, a DNS server near you changes your domain name to its corresponding IP address and arranges your communication with it. To do this, each networking operating system uses a type of software called DNS Resolver, which helps to find an IP address.

Port

Port word Bangla means port, and port really is like that. Space through which a lot of input is then output. In the case of computers, ports are used in two cases. For example:

Hardware ports - The hardware ports that we give the mouse, keyboard, printer connection to the back of the computer.

Another port is created while programming. These ports are like an extension with an IP address, which ensures certain services. Any server machine creates different ports for its different types of service. Clients usually communicate over a specific IP address port. If and the number of ports can be up to 1-3. But most commonly used ports use smaller numbers.

Below are some required port names and numbers.

  • SSH
  • FTP
  • Telnet 23
  • TCPMUX (TCP port service multiplexer)
  • IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol)
  • POP3 (Post Office Protocol version 3)
  • SMTP 25 (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)
  • WWW 80
If a port is not protected by a firewall, it is possible to communicate with that port anytime, anywhere with a server computer permission.

From this point, if you find a webpage through a web browser and find it on a server computer, the following steps work:

  • Protocol (HTTP)
  • Server Name (Toshost.com)
  • File Name (contact.php)

It then communicates with a DNS server to convert your browser 'toshost.com' into an IP address. Then, he establishes a communication system with the browser server computer with the received IP address. This communication is usually established through port 7 of the server computer. If your browser server wants this page to connect to your computer after the connection is established https://my.Techsanjeet.com/contact.php. The term GET Request in the process of getting the browser to the server is 'GET Request'. And the browser sends “Get Request” to get the webpage from the server. The server then sends that page to the browser in the form of "HTML Text".
Lastly, your browser reads "HTML Text" and displays the page accordingly.
